First scientific CardioPharmaGENET publication explores the cost-effectiveness of pharmacogenomics-guided cardiovascular treatment
Our first Open Access scientific publication was developed through the scientific collaboration of CardioPharmaGENET WGs 2 and 4 and has been published in Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine.
The article “Cost-Effectiveness of Pharmacogenomics-Guided Treatment in Cardiovascular Disease: An Umbrella Review”, brings together evidence from 10 systematic reviews encompassing 149 unique primary cost-effectiveness studies to examine whether pharmacogenomics-guided prescribing can represent a cost-effective approach in cardiovascular medicine. The study examined several clinically relevant drug–gene pairs and the findings show that cost-effectiveness is highly context-dependent, varying according to the drug–gene pair, comparator, healthcare system, cost-effectiveness threshold, and assumptions used in economic models.
Beyond establishing clinical evidence, successful implementation of cardiovascular pharmacogenomics requires understanding its economic value and how this value differs across healthcare systems and policy environments. The authors thus highlight the need for more real-world evidence and standardized pharmacoeconomic evaluations to support broader clinical adoption of pharmacogenomics-guided cardiovascular treatment.
Published on 23 August 2026, the work represents another step towards CardioPharmaGENET’s goal of translating pharmacogenomic evidence into sustainable, evidence-based approaches to personalised cardiovascular medicine across Europe.
